Wimbledon Zverev Reaches Third Round Monfils Loses

Alexander Zverev defeated America’s Tenness Sandgren 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 in a one-hour and 45-minute match to enter the third round of the Wimbledon Championships on Thursday. However, 13th seed Gael Monfils lost to Spanish player Prado Martínez in a four-set match.

Zverev, who lost in the second round of the Halle Open, hit 13s and made only two double faults. Tenness hit eight s and made six double faults.

The 24-year-old German, who is yet to win a Grand Slam title, converted five out of 10 break points.

Martinez defeated 13th seed Frenchman Monfils 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to reach the third round. Although Monfils’ game was power-packed as he scored 21 aces and won more on first serve than Martinez’s six, he was unsuccessful.

Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Bottic van de Jandschulp.

Chile’s 17th seed Christian Garin reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career, defeating Australian Mark Polmans 7-6(3), 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) in four sets.
