NEW DELHI: Politicians and sportspersons have commemorated the death of Milkha Singh, the ‘flying Sikh’ of Indian athletics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he has lost an athlete who earned a special place in the hearts of Indians. “We have lost an extraordinary sportsperson. Milkha has earned a special place in the hearts of Indians. His inspirational personality has attracted millions of people. I am deeply saddened by his departure, “the Prime Minister tweeted.

He had spoken to Milkha Singh a few days back. Little did he know that this would be their last conversation. Many emerging athletes will gain strength from his life journey. The Prime Minister added his condolences to his family and many fans around the world.

In his condolence message, President Ramnath Kovind said that the story of Milkha Singh’s struggles and strength would inspire Indian generations. Home Minister Amit Shah, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Indian cricketers and other sportspersons and politicians have expressed their condolences on the death of Milkha Singh.
