TOKYO: Sina Blakstenius scored two goals as Sweden broke its 44-match unbeaten streak on Wednesday to beat world-ranked America in Olympic women’s football 3-0. In other matches played on Wednesday, Brazil thrashed China 5-0 while Britain registered a 2-0 win over Chile. The US women’s team, a strong contender for Olympic gold, had reached Tokyo unbeaten for 44 matches, where world ranking fifth-ranked Sweden halted their unbeaten streak.

The special thing is that even five years before the Olympic Games (Rio 2016), Sweden had stopped America’s victory in the quarter-finals. In this Group G match, the third goal for Sweden was scored by Lena Herting. China’s women’s team easily succumbed to the seventh-placed Brazil in the world rankings.

Marta (in the ninth and 74th minutes) scored two goals for Brazil, becoming the first player to score in five consecutive Olympics. Apart from Marta, Debinha, Andreessa Alves and Beatriz also contributed to Brazil’s big win. Six-time FIFA ‘Player of the Year’ Marta has scored 111 international goals, the most for a Brazilian male or female player, with Ellen White’s two goals in another match to help Britain qualify for the Olympics first. It didn’t take much trouble to beat the women’s team.

Against world ranking 37th-ranked Chile, White gave Britain the lead in the 18th minute and then doubled the lead in the 75th minute. In this team of Britain, in addition to England, ranked sixth in the world ranking, Scotland, Players from Wales and Northern Ireland are included. Earlier, the UK team participated in the 2012 Olympics.
