TOKYO: At least 19 people went missing in the western Atami city of Japan’s capital Tokyo on Saturday after heavy rain caused mudslides and houses to collapse. The officers provided this information.
Takamichi Sugiyama, a spokesman for Shizuoka Prefecture, said dozens of houses in Atami were feared to have been torn down. State broadcaster NHK put the number missing at 20, but Sugiyama confirmed at least 19 people were missing. He said that this number could increase.

Parts of Japan have been receiving torrential rains since the beginning of this week. Sugiyama said that it was raining heavily in the area since morning. Self defense forces along with fire brigade and policemen will be involved in the rescue operation. A warning has been given to evacuate a large area.
