WEST BENGAL: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the imposition of a presidential rule immediately on the deteriorating peace and security in the state after the elections in West Bengal.

A public interest litigation has been filed seeking the deployment of troops and paramilitary forces to Bengal to bring the administration back to normalcy, boost public confidence, focus on internal security and set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on violence.

The petition was received by Justices Vineet Sharan and Dinesh Maheshwari. Mamata Banerjee has also issued notices to the government to pay compensation to the families of those affected in the post-election clashes.

The petition was filed by Ranjana Agnihotri, a UP practice lawyer, and social activist Jitinder Singh, while advocate Hari Shankar Jain appeared for them. At the same time, Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, was not personally notified.
