DELHI: BCCI secretary Jay Shah made a statement on Saturday, a day after the reports of the T20 World Cup being shifted from India to the UAE surfaced. He said the board was monitoring the situation and a decision would be taken soon. Shah, however, indicated that the tournament may be shifted to the UAE.
The T20 World Cup is to be held in India in October-November. IPL 2021, being played in the midst of the second wave of the Korana epidemic in India, was postponed to the first week of May after corona cases were reported in the bio bubble. The second phase of IPL 14 is also to be played in UAE. The remaining matches of IPL 2021 are going to be held in UAE from 19 September.
Talking to news agency NI, Jay Shah said, “Due to the situation of Kovid-19 in our country, we may shift the tournament to UAE. We are monitoring the situation closely, players’ health and safety are paramount, we will take a final decision soon. According to the report of ESPN Cricinfo, the T20 World Cup will start from October 17 and its final will be played on November 14. 16 teams will participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Earlier, the ICC had confirmed after a board meeting that the BCCI would retain the right to host the T20 World Cup even if the tournament was moved out of India.
Round 1 in the T20 World Cup will consist of 12 matches, involving eight teams, out of which four (the top two from each group) will qualify for the Super 12. Four out of eight teams (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, Papua New Guinea) will qualify for the Super 12 by making it to the top eight ranked T20I teams. The Super 12 phase, consisting of 30 matches, will begin on October 24 at three venues in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The Super 12 phase will be followed by three playoff matches, with two semi-finals and a final.
